DU opens admissions for Undergraduate professional courses

The Delhi University has announced the admission for under-graduate professional courses in Bachelor of Business Studies, Bachelor of Financial and Investment Analysis and B.A. (Honours) Business Economics for all aspiring students who want to seek admission and can register themselves online from April 4 onwards.

The registration window will continue till May 4. Three websites are available for the admissionprocedure - www.south.du.ac.in/fassh, http://dducollege.du.ac.in and www.sscbsdu.ac.in. The USP of the admission procedure is the online format including registration and payment of fees in a bid to save paper wastage and go green. Theprospectus too is available in the online format. The fees can be paid online through credit card and net banking.

The combined entrance examination will be held on June 5 in Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Kolkata. This is the second consecutive year a commonentrance examination is being held for the three courses. The results will be declared on June 25.

In case students encounter difficulties while filling the online admission form, they can write to admissionhelpdesk@gmail.com and call dedicated telephone lines- 011-45108880/81/82/83. Help desks will also be set up at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, Ram Lal Anand College (evening), S.G.T.B. Khalsa College and Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies.

The facility of cash deposit at post offices and designated branches of Axis Bank has also been provided.

Admission to all three courses is based on equal weightage for Class XII marks and the score in the entrance test. Group discussion and personal interview are additional components for admission to the BBSS and BFIA courses.

The BBS course with 277 seats is available at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, Keshav Mahavidyalaya and Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies while the B.A. (Hons.) Business Economics with 550 seats is being offered at Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, College of Vocational Studies, Gargi College, Lakshmibai College, Maharaja Agrasen College, RLA College (Evening), S.G.G.S. College of Commerce, S.G.N.D. Khalsa College, S.G. T.B. Khalsa Colelge and Shivaji College.

The BFIA course which has 62 seats is available only at the Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies.

Kamala Nehru College to join protest against semesters

Taking a cue from teachers of othercolleges under the Delhi University, teachers from Kamala Nehru College have decided to join in the protest against the implementation of the semestersystem.

Teachers at the college have decided to take classes on the lawns of the college. Earlier, member of the Joint Action Board (JAB) that is a forum created by teachers to fight against thesemester system had decided to take classes in the lawn in front of the vice chancellor's office from Monday.

The JAB had decided to take classes in the lawns in order to seek fresh debate against the implementation of the semester system. They had to cut short their protest because of the two-day university bandh. The teachers will now continue the protest as classes resume today.

Members of the JAB have said that more collegesand teachers are expected to join the protest against the semesters and begin taking classes in the open. 

Delhi University had already implemented the semester system for 13 undergraduate science courses last year. Teachers have said that they would protest against the semester system as they have alleged that the teaching in the science courses has worsened.

Semester tussle - DU teachers to hold classes in VC's lawn

Teachers at the Delhi University have decided to protest against the implementation of thesemester system in colleges, not by conducting strikes, but by holding classes outside in the lawns.

Members of the Joint Action body (JAB) ofteachers will on Thursday and Friday, conduct classes in the lawns outside the office of the vice chancellor to draw his attention to the matter of implementing the semesters for undergraduatecourses.

Karen Gabriel, associate professor at St. Stephen's College and a member of JAB said that JAB currently had around 100 members. Out of these, around 20 are expected to take their classes out in the open. 

"The classes will be taught on the two days like any normal day and the students have been told about them. The classes would start at around 8:30am and students will only have to come out in the open and then can walk back to the campus for other classes," she said.

She further added that the administration of theuniversity had never consulted the teachers before the decision to implemented the semester system was taken.

The university has already implemented the semester system for 13 undergraduatescience courses and there are now plans to completely shift all courses to thesemester system mode from the upcoming academic session.

Teachers from several departments such as economics, English, history and philosophy have already expressed their disapproval during their general body meetings at the switch to the semester system.

Teachers have alleged that the content of the courses is being diluted in order to accommodate the new semester system.

DU principals raise problem of absent teachers with VC


 Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University, Mr. Dinesh Singh, convened a meeting with the college principals on Monday. In their meeting with the vice-chancellor, they expressed their concern aboutteachers' absenteeism and the general deterioration of the academic atmosphere in Delhi University.

The VC, in the first of the three meetings, met principals of colleges in north and east Delhi, a meeting which lasted nearly five hours. While the VC reiterated the university's commitment for more transparency in governance, completion of thesemester system at the undergraduate level and improving the infrastructure of colleges, the principals urged administrative intervention to restore the academic atmosphere of the university and its colleges.

A common concern has been that of absenteeism and the university administration has promised to address the issue on an urgent basis.

According to the principal of Kirori Mal College, Bhim Sen Singh, "It is heartening to know that the new VC's immediate concern is to restore the academic atmosphere of the colleges and the university which has been adversely affected due to the recent disruptions. As college principals we also extend our support to the new initiatives he has announced. We also extend our support to the new administration as it is going to complete the implementation of the semester system from July 2011."

Another 25 principals from west Delhi colleges will be interacting with the VC on Tuesday.

Second inter college sports meet for students with disabilities inaugurated

New Delhi: The Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Wasnik today inaugurated the Second Inter College Sports Meet for students withdisabilities which began here today.

The meet has been organized by the Equal Opportunity Cell of the Delhi University (DU) in which the students with disabilities are participating. Some of these students have participated in the international para sports events.

Speaking at the occasion, Mukul Wasnik said that the central government is committed to all-round development of the persons with disabilities and has been taking several initiatives in this regard.

Wasnik informed that to address the needs of people with hearing and speech impairment, the ministry of social justice and empowerment has started the process of establishing an Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre.

The aim of the centre will be to promote the use and spread of Indian Sign Language in cooperation with native sign language users through research, teaching materials, curriculum development, outreach and awareness programmes.

The minister also informed that a task force has been set up under the Director General, CSIR, to work out the details for the proposal of establishment of a National Centre for Universal Design and Barrier-free Environment (NCUDBE).

He also informed that an assessment is underway of the existing status of the seven National Institutes working for people with disabilities which will lead to new measures to make these institutes the 'Centres of Excellence'.

Informing that his ministry's website was the first to become accessible to persons with disabilities, Wasnik exhorted the Equal Opportunity Cell to make efforts for making the Delhi University website accessible to the students with disabilities.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor of Delhi University, Vivek Suneja said that the university administration will make all efforts to develop facilities for the students withdisabilities.

Prashant Karmakar, the bronze winner in the Para Sports event of Commonwealth Games was also present on the occasion and accepted the Torch from the athletes.
