Workshop on food and water security

The Society of Agricultural and Irrigation Engineers (SAIE) of the College of Engineering, Guindy, conducted a three-day national-level technical symposium, Greenics 2011, from February 14 to 16. It was conducted under the patronage of UNESCO.
The event saw participants from Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, Kumulur; Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, and Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, Tiruchi. It was inaugurated by M.P. Vasimalai, executive director, DHAN foundation (an NGO working on poverty eradication in villages). He commended the Society on the various farmer orientation programmes it has conducted in the past two years.
The highlight of Greenics 2011 was the workshop on Food and Water Security, the foundation for which was laid by Dr. Bhanu Neupane, Programme Specialist for Water Resources and Hydrology UNESCO - South Asia. The entire workshop was organised and conducted by the undergraduate students of the Society.
The workshop consisted of seminars on a variety of topics ranging from climate change and virtual water to rural water management, all essential in achieving food and water security.
The seminar was followed by discussions on the topic by experts from varied fields including economy, ecology, soil biology and agriculture. The final recommendations of the workshop will be published in UNESCO's international journal.
The final day of Greenics saw a host of events which included Agribusiness, Prof-challenge, Innovate and G-modeling which tested the students' creativity and engineering bent of mind. Also, the science expo was an instant success with exhibits on automatics seeders, climate change and irrigation systems.

US varsities taking holistic view of Asian students' applications

US varsities taking holistic view of Asian students' applicationsNew Delhi: The focus is shifting from the entrance test scores to a holistic assessment of the profiles of Indian and Asian students aspiring to pursue higher education in the US and Canada, officials said on Saturday.

IDP Education India, one of the largest education placement companies in the world, is currently hosting global education fairs showcasing US and Canadian universities across the country for aspiring students.

"The universities are paying attention to other things than just test scores lately to judge aspiring Asian students seeking admission to American universities. They are trying not to penalize the profiles of students if they fail to log high scores in SAT, GMAT and GRE entrance tests," Luna Das, IDP Education's national manager for training and client relationship (North America), said at a press briefing here on Saturday.

Citing a recent instance, she said, "An Indian student who scored 580 in GMAT (Graduate Management Test Examination) applied to studymaster of business administration at the StanfordUniversity.

"Usually, one cannot expect a student with a GMAT score of 580 to make it to Stanford University. But the university took into account the student's exceptional credentials, professional experience, insightful essays, social work and contacts in the industry to decide that his presence would add value to the classroom."

She said the IDP expected to send nearly 250 Indian students to the US in 2011 fall term. The firm partners with 80 US universities and counsels students applying to 200 universities in America.

According to Mirjana Radulovic, international marketing and recruitment specialist at the University of Waterloo in Canada, "more and more universities in North America were adopting a holistic approach to admission than just relying on the entrance test scores".

Her university, which works with the IDP Education, was no exception.

"Many universities in Canada do not require entrance test scores. We assess students on their bachelors programme and high school scores," Radulovic said.

A tentative break-up of GMAT scores for outstation students for the year 2011 and the corresponding ranking of universities shows that non-American aspirants with an average score of 700 and above are eligible for US universities like HarvardUniversity, Stanford University, U-PENN (Wharton), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT-Sloan), Northwestern (Kellogg), Columbia University , Berkeley,University of California, Yale and New York, says Learn Hub, a campus listing group.

A tentative trend of the average Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores for 2010-2011 shows that top US universities like the MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, Georgia Tech, Cal Tech, Harvard and Cornell require a aggregate of 1,200 and above.

Pointing out changing trends in technical education, Jeffery W. Grundy, director, office of international students and faculty of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, said: "Students from India were more inclined to newer streams of technology like bio-informatics, bio-medical technology, electrical technology, pharma-tech and communication technology.

"Nearly 99 per cent of Indian students wanted to have work experience in the US," he said.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology has 670 Indian students in its fraternity of 1,250 students.

IDP has a network of 17 offices in 16 cities of India. "We are planning to set more centres in northeastern India and in Ranchi and Patna," a spokesperson said, adding that the "next two years would see at least 30,000 to 32,000 Indian students applying to foreign universities after a period of low following incidents of racial violence". IANS

Symposium on digital libraries

The Department of Library and Information Science of the University of Madras holds the distinction of being one of the oldest departments of studies in the field in India.
Over the period, the department has expanded its programmes, content, infrastructure and facilities to such an extent that it became the first in the country to be recognised and funded under the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1997.
Under the programme, a series of seminars and workshops are conducted annually to benefit library and information science professionals, scholars and students.
A two-day UGC-SAP symposium on digital library initiatives in India was organised by the department recently.
The symposium coincided with the golden jubilee celebrations of the department.
The symposium focussed on discussions and deliberations by eminent persons on the digital library initiatives at various libraries in the country. The objective was to help the participants understand the concept, design and development of a digital library and the success stories through the presentation of case studies of some of the completed and ongoing digitisation projects in India.
Tools and formats
The symposium tried to empower the participants with the confidence and skills necessary to build a digital library at their institutions and equip them to understand the many tools and formats, preservation, intellectual property rights and so on involved in the development and management of digital libraries.

Options in automobile engineering

Specialised job: Automobile engineers who specialise in design can find jobs in the research and development wing of major automobile manufacturers.
I would like to know more about automobile engineering courses. Please also detail the job opportunities in this field.
PRASHIBH KUTTAN, EMAIL
Automobile engineering is one of the options available for graduate level study in engineering. In Kerala, the selection is based on the rank obtained in the entrance examination and the marks scored in Plus Two examination. In Tamil Nadu, there is no entrance test and students are admitted on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination. Deemed Universities conduct entrance test for admission.
The discipline involves understanding the mechanics of vehicle chassis, internal combustion engine, electrical systems, design and maintenance of automobiles.
Aspirants should have passed Plus Two examination with at least 50 per cent marks in mathematics and 50 per cent marks in mathematics, physics and chemistry/ computer science/ biotechnology/ biology put together. Those who are appearing for the qualifying examination can also apply.
To become an automobile engineer, one should opt for BE/ B.Tech. course in automobile engineering or mechanical engineering, and further specialise in transportation and automobile design at the postgraduate or postgraduate diploma level.
A few engineering colleges offer B.Tech./ BE degree courses in automobile engineering. In Kerala, Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering, Pappanamcode, Thiruvananthapuram (affiliated to University of Kerala) offers B.Tech. course in mechanical (automobile) engineering. The total number of seats is 60. Fifty per cent of the seats fall under the government merit seats. Phone: 0471-2490572.
