2.15 lakh learners to receive degrees on Convocation Day

New Delhi: IGNOU will host the 22nd ConvocationCeremony at Sanchar Kendra at the IGNOUHeadquarters on April 2, 2011

Nearly 2.15 lakh students will receive degrees/diplomas with 78 gold medallists across the nation. Nearly 6,628 students from Delhi will receive degrees/diplomas with 12 gold medalists from the capital itself. Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal will be the chief guest at the ceremony.

All students who have passed their Master, Bachelor and Diploma examinations held in December 2009 and June 2010 are eligible for award of degrees/ diplomas.

A committee for Liaison, Transport and Accommodation etc. constituted by the Vice Chancellor resolved that five mini buses and 20 Gramin Sewa vehicles would be engaged for providing transportation to the students and guests who attend the 22nd convocation. The pick-up points will be Saket Metro Station and Saket (Traffic Court, Near Anupam Apartment).

Students who have registered for getting their degree certificates in person at convocation will be eligible to attend the convocation at New Delhi and at the respective regional centres. The main function will be held at New Delhi for award of gold medals, degrees and diplomas to eligible students and simultaneously at its regional centres at Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Agartala, Aligarh, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Cochin, Chandigarh, Darbhanga, Dehradun, Guwahati, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Itanagar, Imphal, Jammu, Jaipur, Jabalpur, Karnal, Khanna, Kolkatta, Koraput, Kohima, Lucknow, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Port Blair, Pune, Panaji, Raipur, Rajkot, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Siliguri, Srinagar, Trivandrum, Varanasi and Vijaywada through teleconferencing mode.

India vs Sri Lanka: ICC bans TV channels from covering World Cup final

NEW DELHI: A day before the World Cup final clash between India and Sri Lanka , the International Cricket Council (ICC) renewed the ban on Indian television news channels from covering the match at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

ICC on Friday cancelled the accreditation for all Indian news channels from being allowed inside the stadium.

ICC's cancellation came despite the intervention from the Information & Broadcast Ministry.

Information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni had also taken up the issue with agriculture minister and ICC president Sharad Pawar after the Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

TV channels were permitted to cover the India-Pakistan World Cup semifinals after ICC lifted the ban on accredited journalists from the news channels for a day, following intervention by Soni. She had written a letter to Pawar requesting him to restore the status-quo and allow the electronic media to report on the event as was the case earlier.

Bangalore most preferred job city for engineering students

NEW DELHI: Seven out of every 10 engineering students in India prefer Bangalore as their 'first job' city, ahead of the capital Delhi, reveals a survey.

According to employability measurement and recruitment firm Aspiring Minds Research Cell, about 72 per cent of the engineering students surveyed voted for Bangalore as the most preferred destination to work in.

"In India, Bangalore is the engineers' Mecca. It offers growth, options and a community of like-minded people. Bangalore has undoubtedly the largest base in terms of IT companies, opportunities and an existing engineering population," Aspiring Minds Founder and Director Himanshu Aggarwal said.

Bangalore was followed by Delhi, which was preferred by 32 per cent of the respondents, while Hyderabad was the favourite among 30 per cent of the students surveyed.

At fourth place is Pune, with 30 per cent of the respondents voting for the city, followed by Chennai, which was favoured by 23 per cent of students.

Mumbai was sixth in the list of preferred cities for engineers.

Regional preferences emerge strongly, as students from the South, West and North of the country voted for Bangalore, Pune and Delhi, respectively, as their favourite city. For easterners, Bangalore was the favourable option. Chandigarh and Mysore also emerged as preferred destinations for engineering students in the survey.

The survey took into account the views of 19,000 engineering students across India. It was undertaken to determine the city preferences of students and allowed the respondents to specify up to three cities.

First Sir Syed Lecture held at TISS, Mumbai

Aligarh: The first lecture in the Sir Syed LectureSeries was organized by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) at Mumbai on Monday. 

The talk was delivered by eminent historian and former Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Mushirul Hasan on "Voyage to Modernism: Syed Ahmad of Aligarh". 

He spoke about the breadth of Sir Syed's vision and the key role played by him in the educational upliftment of the country in general and the Muslim Renaissance in particular. 

The lecture was followed by a question-answer session. The lecture was attended by students and faculty members of different institutions of Mumbai. The Sir Syed Lecture Series was conceptualized by the students of TISS (several of whom are AMU alumni) to get the local students acquainted with his ideas. 

The lecture series seeks to discuss Sir Syed's thoughts in a theoretically-grounded manner and bring forth his relevance in present times. It also strives to identify new research areas on the workof Sir Syed and to enrich social sciences by arranging academic deliberations on his writings.

Dalai Lama to address Mumbai University students

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama will address around 500 students the MumbaiUniversity here on Friday, a varsity official said.

"The Dalai Lama will talk to students on 'Ancient Wisdom, Modern Thought' and then take questions from them," the official told the sources.

"The university had initiated talks with the Dalai Lama to address students. He gladly accepted and gave us a date," he added.

Dalai Lama will also meetuniversity officials and academicians from different departments.

This is his first visit to theuniversity, the official added.

Dalai Lama will also attend another programme inMumbai organized by the Bihar Foundation and deliver a discourse on the occasion.

(NEWS) 9,600 IIT Seats 5.3 Lakh Aspirants In 2011 Session

This year, the total number of applicants for the joint entrance exam (JEE), have gone up by 5,000 as compared to last year, to get the most coveted seat in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) from Mumbai zone.

While number of applicants from Mumbai is almost the same, there is a substantial growth in the number of applicants from tier-II cities like Nagpur and Jaipur this year, which also falls in the Mumbai zone.

The total numbers of applicants across the country has gone up from over 4.5 lakh to 5.3 lakh this year. Over 5.3 lakh candidates across the country would be vying for 9,600 seats in IITs.

From the Mumbai zone itself, which also has the highest numbers of applicants from the seven zones, 85,169 students have applied for the IIT-JEE. Students from Maharashtra, Goa, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Belgaum from Karnataka also apply from the Mumbai zone.

According to the chairman of IIT-JEE from IIT-Bombay, Abhijeet Chatterjee, candidates from tier-II cities contribute the most to the increase in numbers.

Google tech-head, Bluetooth inventor to address Mumbai students

Mumbai: Google's Chief Technology AdvocateMichael Jones, Bluetooth inventor Jaap Haartsen, and constructor of the world's tallest building William Baker will address thousands of students at the 'Techfest' organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay starting on Friday.

While Jones will speak about how Google developed Google Earth and Google Maps, Haartsen will talk about development of Bluetooth. A whopping 75,000 students are expected to participate in several events spanned over a period of three days starting on Friday.

Exhibitions like the Leonardo Da Vinci Robotics, Tech Connect and Open Vibe will be organized to showcase indigenous research activities at IIT-Bombay. 

"Genius that he was, Da Vinci had constructed mechanical flying birds during his last years. Reconstruction of two of his works will be exhibited for the first time at 'Techfest' by Niccolai-Techno Art Research Group from France," said Gajendra Dhaka, a student organizer. 

Several competitions like Full Throttle - modeled on the lines of rally racing, and Robowars, the inter-college combat robotics, promise to keep the thrill of students alive and kicking.IANS
